Hi there! Welcome (back?!) to my blog! :) So, I missed a few weeks. I had a plan for my post, but then I got a better idea, and then I realized it was so much work and it was the next week already. Oops... You know how you first have a project and then you get an idea and another, and soon you have at least 10 WIPs and not one of them is getting finished. A few weeks ago I shared my pattern for a simple snowman decoration, and I've made a couple new ones since then to test my pattern. When it was time to start crocheting a new top hat for the latest addition to my pile of snowmen, I decided that they can't all wear the same outfit! As you probably noticed in the last post, only one of the two snowmen featured was wearing a top hat and a bow tie. The other one is wearing a scarf and a beanie(, because who doesn't want to make miniature beanies?!) So, next week, I will be sharing some patterns for snowman accessories with you. Why next week, you might ask. While trying to write down my pattern for an adorable poncho, I was struck with the realization that some of the techniques I take for granted are not easily explained. To make my patterns as clear as possible, I need to first make sure that all required information will be available to you, if you're not too familiar with crochet yet. The difference between US and UK abbreviations Yeah, US and UK patterns really do have different abbreviations and words for some of the stitches! It can be confusing. I personally never remember which is which and I need to consult google. Now that I have been doing some research for you, I've found that I prefer the US version, because to me, they feel more logical somehow. So, you can usually assume that I use the US stitches in my patterns. I have created a simple cheat sheet where you can see the chart markings for the most popular stitches as well as their US and UK abbreviations and explanations for those abbreviations. You can also find the Finnish words and abbreviations from this sheet! I will put this cheat sheet to my new Tips & Tricks tab, so you will be able to find it more easily later. Turning chains? What an earth is a turning chain?! Basically it's a way to give your hook some height before the first stitch after you have just turned the piece when working in rows. In some patterns, these turning chains count as the first stitch of the row while in others, they don't. Sometimes you have to read the notes of a pattern to find out which is the case. Easy peasy, right..? :D At some point, I found this one blog post by chance. And it changed my world of crochet forever! The post is written by Susan Carlson from Felted Button, and can I just say, she is a genius! I haven't been using turning chains in ages after learning the option #3 from that blog post. Be sure to check it out, because it is awesome and I use the technique everywhere where there should be a turning chain. What should I call that though in my patterns? Turning stack, perhaps, since it is a stack of two or more single crochets after all? That's it for now. Hopefully my next post will be about the awesome accessories I have made for my happy little snowmen.
